I'm a 44 yr old male born with very loose subluxing shoulders. My right shoulder often hurt at the posterior deltoid when doing bench press at the gym. I eventually had both of them tightened up with keyhole surgery.
In 2010 I had the right shoulder stabilized and tightened via keyhole surgery. A few days later I was in the ER from a pulmonary embolism and a clot extending from my right shoulder to the elbow!! Then the healing process was complicated because it seemed it was too tight. I had trouble lifting the arm upward because it was pinching in the acromioclavicular joint and supraspinatus. My physio used a pulling movement to separate the humeral head from the acromion and that allowed me to lift my arm higher temporarily. Eventually after many months I was able to lift my arm to full extension.
Two years later I had the left shoulder stabilized too. Whilst my left arm was in a sling I noticed major pain on the right shoulder. I originally thought it was because that shoulder was doing all the work. But I never had that problem when my 'Left' shoulder was doing all the work.
Now my left shoulder is fine. But the right shoulder is in a lot of pain at the posterior deltoid (worse than before the stabilisation surgery) and it's very sore and inflammed at the acromioclavicular joint.
My orthopaedic surgeon said it's not related to the operation. Since I'm now 44 yrs old he claims it's normal deterioration and that 90% of people have some form of arthritis in their shoulders by age 40. I disagree with him!! I believe the tightening of the shoulder brought the humeral head so close to the acromion that it's now impinging on the supraspinatus muscle/ligament causing chronic pain.
I am receiving cortisone injections for the pain and can no longer use the gym. This is the opposite outcome I was hoping for. The purpose of the surgery was to stop the posterior deltoid pain so I could lift heavier weights. Now I can't lift any at all and had to stop going to the gym!!
Any other opinions on this?
