Since Saban and lionsgate first announced last week they are making a new power rangers movie, a lot of fans have speculated what it will be like. This inspired me to ask this hypothetical question: If YOU were in charge of making the new movie, what would you do? What kind of story would it have? Who would be in it? Who would direct it? What kind of rangers/ villians/ zords/ gear would you have? Tone? How would you 're-imagine' mmpr? It's up to you!
I'll go first: In terms of 're-imagining' mighty morphin,I would keep the mighty morphin powers, just upgrade them to be even cooler (new suit designs, ect.). Instead of having the same characters as mmpr, I would come up with a new cast of rangers, a new team for a new generation of fans. I feel like power rangers survived all these years on mostly its concept, not its characters. Plus , people I know who haven't watched PR since the nineties don't remember the characters themselves, save for Billy, Tommy, or Kimberly. Having a new mentor giving a new team and these upgraded powers could keep the story in the same universe as well, and not be a direct reboot.
If it became a three movie trilogy, I would set it up like this:
First movie- introduce rangers and zords, villains- Rangers first come to save the world from an alien invasion.
Second- introduce green ranger (and zord), auxiliary zords, a battlizer- Rangers face off against an evil green ranger
Third movie- introduce some kind of powered up mode, another set of zords, white ranger- Rangers have their big final battle against evil.
Not sure who would direct it. I think Joss Whedon might do a good job. No clue for actors. I wouldn't make the movie much darker, but I would clean up some of the cheesiness, definitely less posing. Maybe like the tone of some of the recent Marvel films. I would also give the audience an explanation for things we take for granted, like "why do the zords look like dinos" or "where is the military during a monster attack. That's all I got.
