[DISCUSSION] Starlight studio communicator material wear

When I got my Starlight Studios Red Communicator it had said "durable enough for every day wear" -- so I did, for about 20 days in a row I wore it to work, then took it off when I got home (so ~9 hours for about 20 work days). I was quite careful to not get water on it (maybe that was my mistake?) but it seems that the silver(?) plating has rubbed off (or otherwise oxidized or something) leaving a bronze/copper-y looking material underneath.



I was wondering if anyone knew 1) what the material was and if it is any way harmful (i.e. leeching through the skin) and 2) how to prevent it from happening again, if I were to get another!
