I've spoken about this before in various threads, but I figure it's a decent enough discussion point that it deserved a thread of it's own.
Anyway. When Saban first bought back the PR license, Tzachor apparently made a statement to the effect of "Each series of PR belongs to it's own universe". Presumably events roughly analogous to past seasons still occured in each iteration of the universe, but the blanket statement was soon met with criticism and derision by the fandom at large, and it seemed like subsequently, there was an attempt to tie it into the same universe.
However, we see Samurai in a universe where there were 18 previous Red Samurai Rangers, they're in a region that seems to be influenced by Japanese, American, and Polynesian cultures. Bulk lives there, is broke, and seems to have had a lobotomy. Skull is rich, and has a son. Bulk has a "past with the Power Rangers" in this universe, but rather than any MMPR reference or desire to be a Ranger, he actually wants to become a Samurai, which by the way, is still a thing in this universe.
So, clearly, weighing up all the evidence, Samurai takes place in an alternate universe from the Main PRU.
Samurai is later shown to exist in the same universe as Megaforce, to the point that Samurai's mysterious "Japolynesican" location doesn't seem to be that far away from Harwood County (which is itself an odd New Zealand/American hybrid, going by the ANZ Bank signs in the background of the mall episode).
Megaforce, as we all know, has it's own share of continuity problems. I won't list them all, because we know how poorly they did with that season. Either way, by implicitly sharing a universe with Samurai, you're adding on Megaforce's continuity problems onto Samurai's continuity problems.
So while it never came to pass that each individual season existed in it's own universe, it did overwhelmingly establish that the Neo-Saban Universe's timeline didn't match up to the original PRU.
The series supports the idea of alternate universes, as evidenced in both Samurai AND Megaforce. In Clash of the Red Rangers, it's specified that Corinth exists in an alternate dimension to Samurai. Recently, in Megaforce we confirmed that Corinth likewise exists in an alternate universe to Megaforce.
It's interesting though, because while it's specified to be another dimension than Samurai and Megaforce, if we've confirmed that the Neo-Saban Universe (NSU) is seperate from the original PRU, it still leaves it open for RPM to exist in the original PRU, leaving all those Time Force/SPD/Wasteland theories intact.
But does that imply that the Samurai/Megas travel to the original PRU? Not necessarily. It could simply be that they're traveling to a version of Corinth seperate from both the original PRU and the NSU.
It could be working on Doctor Who-ish rules. Since RPM (the season) has concluded, thus solidifying it's existence, it exists as a fixed point in time, meaning it can't be significantly altered. As such, if the Rangers from the NSU are traveling to Corinth, they can only go to a version of Corinth in which the timeline is different, or the series of events are still in flux. i.e. one not in RPM's universe.
It explains NSU Scott's dickishness, it explains why they've fought Professor Cog both times, and it explains why Megaforce's Corinth looks like Machine World.
This is my breakdown of the universes. I'm sure there are other alternate universe episodes in various seasons but they're not important at the moment.
PRU1: MMPR to RPM as seen on screen.
PRU2: (NSU) Samurai to Super Megaforce.
PRU3: Roughly analogous to PRU1, with alternate Corinth timeline as seen in Clash, and In the Driver's Seat.
It started out as a bad decision by Tzachor, but at this point, you kind of have to adopt the alternate universe theory, if you want to be able to reconcile the various continuity errors.
Thoughts?
