[TV] Why Binge-Watch?

"Binge-watch" has entered the nomenclature as of late, and I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up being a contender for a new entry into the OED. Netflix releases shows all at once so you can watch them at your leisure, but the common trend seems to be to power through a season or two (or more) at once.

Why?

Half the fun of watching a television show is to let the events sink in so you can fully grasp the weight and context. That's part of the reason why television commercials don't seem to be considered terrible.

To bring up an example, several people brag about having blasted through all 700+ episodes of Power Rangers in a year with strict schedules regarding how many episodes one watches. Why? If it becomes a calendar-mandated chore in the same vein as eating breakfast, doesn't that take away some of the enjoyment one would have?

An argument could be construed about how the internet age has ruined our sense of anticipation, but that isn't exactly what I had in mind regarding this topic.

I'm against the binge-watching culture simply because I feel we don't enjoy or appreciate shows as much when we view simply getting through all the episodes as an accomplishment in itself. Who cares if the show is good so long as it results in another show checked off the proverbial list?
