[POWER RANGERS] Why is the red ranger the leader?

I've always wondered why the color red was chose to be the leader of sentai/power rangers and why was red was chosen to stay as leader in every season and not take the backseat to a different color as leader? We've had seasons that other colors where leaders but red still was the shining star.
