Recently, I have been doing some thinking about the state of the Power Rangers. Specifically, I've been considering whether the team itself should be younger? When I say younger, I'm thinking at around the ages of eleven or twelve. Understanding that Power Rangers is a kids show, wouldn't it make sense to make the standard team a set of people the target audience (kids) can identify with?
It would seem like if the team was younger, the producers and writers could manage to write better characters. This is because the cast is their target audience, they would be forced to write material the target audience would want to watch.
The advantages to this could only be found with one of the more polarizing Rangers in history, Justin Stewart (Blue Turbo Ranger from Power Rangers Turbo). In retrospect, Justin had more development than a lot of Rangers from the past and present. Consider:
-He was a genius.
-He didn't have a mother and instead lived with his hardworking father.
-He became a hero at such a young age and therefore had struggled to keep his identity a secret, which is hard to do as a kid.
-He was athletic and played a few sports such as racing, basketball, soccer and baseball.
In sum, we began a journey with a kid who became a hero and by the end, we saw him develop into a young man that he could be provide of.
In looking on how this could be implemented, I considered what could happen in the next couple of seasons. Whatever the adaptation to Ressha Sentai ToQGer will be could greatly benefit from using a cast of twelve year old children. The allies would provide excellent support in teaching them responsibility and dealing with being a hero at such a young age. Plus, because certain episodes are geared on advancing a character's development, this type of cast would actually be enhancing to a greater extent because they are growing up before the audience's eyes.
In addition, because the show is shot in New Zealand, the production could benefit from casting young children from Australia and/or New Zealand instead of casting in the United States. A key reason to do this would be because the parents of a child actor or actress would be hesitant to have their child move to another country to film a show (or not).
It's a thought and I wanted to get a discussion started. So:
Do you think the Power Rangers should be younger?
