I'm sure this has been discussed before but I used the search function and I searched like five pages.
Keep in mind this is all my opinion.
Now there have been some complaints about the shortage of female rangers in Morphin Madness. While, I am in agreement that more female rangers should be competing, there's only 9 out of 80 when females represent at least 1/3 of the characters in Power Rangers. Then I started to wonder, what it would be like if they ever did a gender exclusive Morphin Madness. For the boys, it would be veeeery clear who would come out on top and who would lose. But for the girls, it would be a lot harder to predict the outcome. There's a lot more of an even field with the girls. Every match up I can think of, there are pros and cons on both sides, even a match up like Jen vs Madison would be hard to predict. And even though Mia is THE WORST FEMALE RANGER EVER in my opinion, I completely understand why someone would make a case for her. I've notice that, unlike the males, every female ranger in history is at least adequate at being a Ranger. I rarely find myself asking "Why the hell is this chick on the team?", I do that a lot with the guys.
A lot of people complain about the lack of females in Power Rangers but I feel like it's kind of a good thing. Because there's always only one or two girls on the team, they tend to stand out more, they're more memorable, they're more likable. Because there are more male rangers on a whole, there's more room for trial and error. In fact, I'm kinda pissed off at the portrayal of men is some seasons. Sometimes they're too serious, sometimes they're hard to take seriously. Females tend to be more balanced. They're always smart enough and tough enough. Some are feminine enough (like Kim, Ash, Syd) but not bimbos and quirky enough (like Kim, Kelsey, Lily) but not to the point where we can't take them seriously as rangers. If you were on a Ranger Team wouldn't want to fit the following description: "A team member who is not the strongest nor the weakest, does not have the pressures of being the leader nor is a liability to the team and brings their own special skills to the table." Pretty much every female ranger fits that description, some of the male rangers eh not so much. Of course, this is simply because there aren't as many girls as guys in Power Rangers but in a lot of ways, that's actually a positive.
In terms of development and story lines, I feel like men get the short of the stick. Most episodes focused on male rangers tend to be about "I must train harder so I can defeat monster!", "I am not as strong as the others, I must prove myself", storylines like that are awesome but in a franchise like Power Rangers, they're kinda cliche. A couple of girls (Jen, Madison, Emily) have had episodes like that but, on a whole, girls have more unique storylines. Jen's like "I lost my fiance", Katie's like "I miss my family, I feel homesick", Kira's like "these people are trying to change me into something I'm not". Yeah, those are all cliches but on Power Rangers, they're very unique. Plus, girls just have more awesome and memorable episodes in general. If there's an episode that can be about anyone, they'll make it about a female ranger especially in earlier seasons where they were more limited by the Sentai footage(Kim in Enter The Lizznator, Cassie in Silence is Golden). Kimberly, Katie and Tori being sent to different worlds for example. Kira morphed on top a flying zord, Kendrix sacrificed herself. Unless a male ranger is the leader, he's not really gonna have moments or episodes like that.
And the for most part the girls are just better characters in general. Besides Billy, Kim and Trini are both far more developed than their male teammates. We get to see inside their homes, we learn about their families. When you think Time Force, the first name that pops into your head is Jen. When you think Dino Thunder, you think of Kira. When you think Wild Force, you think of Taylor. And even when they're not the first name that pops in, they're usually the second (Kim, Kat, Kendrix, Tori, Lily). I think Power Rangers, particularly the seasons with one girl are kinda like X-Men, the women are far more interesting and compelling. Sure, there's always a Wolverine(Cam, Tommy, RJ, Dillon) and maybe a Magneto (Mesagog) but for the most part, the girls dominate. Even the case of villains women dominate, the only the female villain that I can't take seriously is Divatox and the only male villain that actually does intimidate me is Mesagog. But the majority, female villains are more awesome. Heck, I can't even remember any of the villains in RPM besides Tenaya.
Overall, I think people who have a problem with the shortage of female rangers should really be happy. I mean, we have every right to be angry when it comes to the merchandise and the marketing but in terms of the actual show, women have been treated very well on Power Rangers, better than a lot of the men. Okay, there's less variety among the female characters but it's still a very good variety. People who want an all female ranger team and stuff along those lines, I completely understand where they're coming from but they should be careful about what they wish for. At the moment, every female ranger is at least good. If we have more girls, there's a stronger chance we'll have girl versions of Justin, Damon, all the male Wild Force rangers, Sam and even if you kinda like these characters, you gotta admit, those guys are just :ughh:
