The other day I was wondering about how Samurai didn't use their real premiere as the first episode and failed miserably IMO but other shows like Teen Titans did it successfully.
And then I started to wonder if other seasons would have done this. The perfect episode to introduce someone to Power rangers and they wouldn't entirely be lost. An episode where all the rangers do something memorable or noteworthy or something that establishes their character. An episode that doesn't go outside of the norm or the formula of the show, such as ending an episode with "It was all a dream". Basically, a really good filler episode.
In MMPR, I'd say the closest thing they had that was A Different Drum. This episode followed the formula of the show. Present civilian conflict of the day, Rita makes a monster conveniently associated with it, the rangers morph and fight the monster, the monster is defeated and the day is saved, valuable moral or lesson is learned. It also displays the personality of each ranger pretty well. Zack displays his cocky showoff attitude when he challenges Bulk to a dance off and of course his awesome moves. Jason displays his hotheadedness when he almost loses his cool and ready to attack Bulk and of course all his leadership qualities when the rangers morph. Billy displays his awkward and clumsy tendencies when he tries to dance and also how intelligent he is when he speaks in techno babble. Trini displays her strength and skill when she beats Jason in arm wrestling and her relationship with Billy when she helps him up and translates his techno babble. And Kimberly displays her caring and considerate side when she treats Melissa, the deaf girl, with compassion and she knows ASL. This is a very good episode for Kim.
But sadly, I can't say it's the perfect filler episode. Zordon and Alpha do not appear, there's no Putty Battle or any martial arts actually and there's no interaction between Kimberly and Trini, one of the key relationships of the series. I need to rewatch the episodes to choose because I'm sure there's one in there.
So you guys, pick an episode from any season that fits the description above. Try to follow these rules.
1. Try to avoid Season Premieres, that's the whole point of this thread.
2. Try to avoid Multi-Parters, because they're almost always unique to the rest of the series.
3. Pick an episode where all the rangers do something noteworthy or character establishing.
4. Avoid episodes that are "different". For example, it doesn't end with a zord battle.
5. Try to pick episodes where all the characters, including allies, appear.
6. Just ask yourself "If this was the first episode I saw from this season, would I be confused?"
